Photoshop has always had multiple routes to the same destination, which means genuinely useful tools can sit untouched for years behind more familiar ones. The Color Grading panel — built into Adobe Camera Raw and accessible directly inside Photoshop — is probably the clearest example of that. Lightroom users often know it well. Many Photoshop-first editors have barely opened it, defaulting instead to Hue/Saturation, Color Balance, or a stack of curves and selective color layers. Those are legitimate tools. Color Grading, though, works from a different conceptual model, and understanding what it actually does to a file changes how you think about tonal color control.
What the Panel Actually Does
Color Grading operates on a three-way split: shadows, midtones, and highlights each get their own color wheel, plus a global wheel that affects all tones simultaneously. Each wheel lets you push a hue into that tonal region at a controlled luminance threshold while an adjustable Blending slider determines how steeply the regions transition into each other, and a Balance slider shifts where the midtone boundary sits relative to the shadow and highlight ranges.
That Blending control is the part most editors skip or misread. Set it low and the three tonal regions stay relatively isolated — a blue push into shadows stays in the darkest pixels and doesn’t bleed up into the midtones. Set it high and the color shifts overlap aggressively, producing a more integrated, filmic wash. Neither setting is “correct”; the effect you want dictates which approach makes sense. What matters is understanding that this isn’t just a prettier interface for Color Balance — the underlying logic is meaningfully different.
Hue and saturation aren’t the only controls. The Luminance dial within each wheel independently brightens or darkens that tonal range without affecting hue. That’s a tool for adding density to shadows or pulling lift into highlights as part of a grade, without reaching for a separate curves layer.
How to Get There from Inside Photoshop
This panel lives inside the Camera Raw filter, which Photoshop has bundled since CC 2014 or so. The fastest path:
- Convert your layer to a Smart Object before you open Camera Raw — this keeps the edit fully non-destructive and lets you re-enter the panel later.
- Go to Filter → Camera Raw Filter.
- In the Camera Raw interface, look for the panel strip on the right. The Color Grading panel is represented by three overlapping circles (a Venn-diagram-style icon in recent versions of the Camera Raw UI — though Adobe has adjusted the panel layout across versions, so if the iconography looks different in your build, look for it explicitly by name).
- The panel opens with three wheels stacked vertically by default: Shadows, Midtones, Highlights, then Global beneath them.
Because it’s applied as a Camera Raw filter on a Smart Object, the grade sits as a re-editable smart filter in your layers panel. You can mask it, lower its opacity, or double-click to reopen and adjust — none of the pixel data underneath is touched.
If you’re working with a raw file opened directly in Camera Raw before it comes into Photoshop, Color Grading is already available in the panel strip there, and any grade set at that stage travels with the .xmp sidecar or gets embedded in the raw metadata depending on the format. That distinction matters for round-trip workflows.
Where It Outperforms a Curves Stack
Curves are more precise in some respects — you can place individual points on the luminosity curve and control them independently. But building a classic split-tone grade with curves (warm shadows, cool highlights, for instance) requires multiple curve layers, often a blend mode trick or two, and careful masking if you want the transition to behave consistently across different images.
Color Grading handles that scenario in seconds with visible, draggable feedback. The hue wheel shows you exactly where the color push is going. The Balance slider lets you decide whether your midtones lean toward the shadow treatment or the highlight treatment, which is a question curves don’t directly ask you.
For batch consistency across a series — editorial work, event coverage, any situation where a set of images needs to share a recognizable tonal palette — the parametric nature of Color Grading makes it easier to copy settings across documents or, if the work started in Camera Raw, sync across multiple raw files at once.
There’s also a perceptual argument: color pushes applied through the Color Grading wheel are calculated in HSL space relative to luminosity ranges, which tends to produce color shifts that feel tied to the light in the image rather than sitting on top of it. A Hue/Saturation layer adjusting, say, blues will catch every blue pixel regardless of whether it’s in a shadow or a specular highlight. Color Grading cares where the tone falls first.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Grade
- Clipped highlights clip before grading. Color Grading doesn’t recover blown-out pixels — any information that’s already been lost upstream won’t reappear because you’ve shifted the highlight wheel.
- The Global wheel interacts with the three regional wheels. It doesn’t override them; the two effects compound. A strong global push plus a strong shadow push in the same hue direction will stack, which can quickly oversaturate shadow regions.
- Luminance values of zero are invisible. Pure black pixels have no luminosity channel to carry hue information, so aggressive shadow grades applied to deeply underexposed images will show less effect than the same grade on shadow regions that still hold tonal detail.
- The panel isn’t available in all Photoshop workspaces. You must go through the Camera Raw filter — it isn’t a standalone adjustment layer type.

The most direct next step: open a recent edit that you’ve already finished, convert the merged result to a Smart Object, and run the Camera Raw filter on it with the explicit goal of pushing the shadows one direction and the highlights the opposite direction using only the Color Grading wheels. Keep the Blending slider in the middle range and watch what the Balance control does as you drag it. That single exercise will make the panel’s logic legible in a way that reading about it can’t quite replicate.
