Stop Guessing at Export Settings: A Practical Lightroom Workflow for Instagram

Lightroom’s Export dialog has over two dozen configurable fields, and most tutorials on Instagram exports tell you to hit the same three settings without explaining why those numbers matter or what Instagram does to your file once it arrives. The result is photographers who follow instructions faithfully and still end up with muddy shadows, oversaturated skies, and a soft-looking image that looks nothing like the Develop module preview.

The underlying issue is that Instagram re-encodes every uploaded image on its own servers. You’re not publishing a file — you’re submitting a source for Instagram to compress again. That distinction changes how you should think about every setting in the Export dialog.


What Instagram Actually Does to Your File

Before touching Lightroom, it helps to understand the destination. Instagram accepts JPEG and, in some contexts, HEIC, but it re-encodes whatever you send through its own compression pipeline. The platform targets specific dimension constraints and applies its own JPEG compression, which means a file you export at high quality will still get re-compressed. Sending an already-compressed JPEG at a low quality setting compounds that loss: Instagram’s encoder is quantizing data that’s already been quantized, and the artifacts stack.

The practical takeaway is to give Instagram the best source material you can within its accepted parameters. A full-resolution, minimally compressed export doesn’t help — you’re sending more data than the platform uses — but an overly compressed export makes the platform’s second pass noticeably worse. The goal is a file that’s large enough to survive the re-encode without unnecessary artifacts from Lightroom’s own compression step.

Dimensions and File Format

Instagram displays images at a maximum width of 1080 pixels. Sending a wider file doesn’t preserve quality — the platform downsizes it anyway, and you’re just adding upload time. Sending a narrower file means Instagram has to upscale, which is worse. Export at exactly 1080 pixels wide and let the height fall where it needs to based on your crop.

For square posts: 1080 × 1080 pixels. For portrait (the aspect ratio that occupies the most screen real estate in the feed): 1080 × 1350 pixels (a 4:5 ratio). For landscape: 1080 × 566 pixels (approximately 1.91:1).

In Lightroom’s Export dialog, set this under Resize to Fit → Long Edge or Width, depending on your orientation. For portrait work, constraining by Width = 1080 px is reliable. Set the resolution field to 72 PPI — Instagram doesn’t read the embedded PPI value when displaying images, but leaving it at 240 or 300 adds no benefit and marginally increases file size.

Export as JPEG, not as TIFF or PNG. Instagram accepts PNG but will still re-encode it as JPEG internally, and a PNG of a photograph is a much larger upload for the same outcome.


Quality Setting and What It Costs You

Lightroom’s Quality slider in the Export dialog maps to JPEG quantization tables, not to a linear scale. The meaningful range for Instagram exports is generally between 70 and 85. Below 70, you’re introducing blocking artifacts in smooth gradients and banding in skies that Instagram’s second compression pass will worsen. Above 85, you’re adding file size without a meaningful difference in what survives the platform’s re-encode.

A quality setting of 80 is a reasonable default for most photos. Images with fine texture, complex foliage, or high-frequency detail (fabric patterns, architectural grillework) may benefit from nudging up to 82–85. Flat, minimal compositions can hold up at 76–78.

These aren’t absolute rules — the right setting depends on encoder behavior and image content — but the direction holds: aim for the lower end of the range where detail remains clean, not the highest setting by default.


Color Space: The Setting That Breaks More Exports Than Any Other

Export in sRGB. Every time.

Instagram’s infrastructure interprets images in sRGB. If you export in Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB and the receiving system ignores the embedded ICC profile (which Instagram’s web and app pipeline may do, depending on device and context), your colors will shift — typically appearing undersaturated or with shifted hues in the reds and oranges.

In Lightroom’s Export dialog, set Color Space → sRGB explicitly, even if your Develop module is set to a wide-gamut working space. The conversion happens at export. Enable Embed Color Profile — Lightroom does this by default, but check that it hasn’t been unticked if you’re working from a saved preset.

If your image was edited in a wide-gamut space and contains vivid, saturated colors that sit outside the sRGB gamut, those colors will clip on conversion. It’s worth doing a soft-proof pass in Lightroom’s View → Soft Proofing mode before export, with the profile set to sRGB, to see which tones fall outside gamut and whether they need adjustment. This is particularly relevant for electric blues, neon greens, and heavily edited reds.


Sharpening for the Export

Lightroom’s output sharpening is separate from the sharpening in the Detail panel. The Detail panel sharpens for the full-resolution image. Output sharpening compensates for the softening that happens during downsampling — in this case, when Lightroom scales your file from its native resolution down to 1080 pixels.

Set Sharpen For → Screen at Amount: Standard. The “High” setting tends to produce halos on well-defined edges that become more visible after Instagram’s re-encode adds its own ringing artifacts. Screen sharpening applies a conservative radius, which is correct for a display-destined image.

If you’re exporting a portrait with fine hair detail or a landscape with distant branches, check the preview at 1:1 after export before uploading. Oversharpened hair or tree lines are one of the most common ways an Instagram export looks wrong at full zoom on a phone screen.


Metadata: What to Strip and What to Keep

Lightroom lets you control metadata inclusion in the Export dialog’s Metadata section. For Instagram, there’s no functional reason to embed full Develop history, camera serial numbers, or GPS coordinates — and some photographers prefer to strip GPS from publicly posted images as a privacy measure.

A reasonable default for Instagram exports:

Instagram strips most metadata from images before displaying them, so the embedded information is primarily for any downstream use of your file — someone saving it, a scraper collecting it, a reverse-image-search result. Strip what you wouldn’t want attached to a file that leaves your control.


Putting It Into a Preset

The point of establishing these settings isn’t to re-enter them for every export — it’s to build a named preset you can apply in one click and adjust as needed.

After configuring the dialog:

  1. Click Add in the Preset panel on the left side of the Export dialog
  2. Name it something specific: “Instagram 1080 sRGB Q80” is more useful than “Instagram Export” when you later create variations for portrait vs. landscape crops
  3. Save a second preset for portrait posts with the dimension constraint set to Long Edge = 1350 px and the same quality and color space settings

If you shoot HEIC on iPhone and import those files into Lightroom before exporting, the Export dialog handles the HEIC-to-JPEG conversion in the same step — you don’t need a separate conversion step before export. The color space and quality settings apply normally.

The next time you export a finished image, run the soft-proof check in sRGB before exporting, confirm the width is exactly 1080 pixels, and verify the Quality slider is set between 78 and 82 unless you have a specific reason to go higher. Those three checks will catch the majority of export problems before the file ever leaves Lightroom.
